How do you watermark your personal photos to protect them online? Substack has a neat feature you can use.
The pre-requisite is you need to first have a logo for your publication. The logo field is in Dashboard→Settings under Basics.
Watch this video of how to add a watermark and caption after uploading the photo from your computer.
Result is shown below. The caveat is that if you move the image around, remember to first copy the caption text and save it on your computer ‘Notepad’ or Notes, or ‘Microsoft Word’, because Substack has a bug - when you move the image, the caption disappears, and you cannot paste it anywhere in the post. But your computer’s clipboard still has the text so save it, copy onto your computer (Word works too) and then paste it back as a caption here. You can size the image by selecting it and reducing or expanding it as shown in the video below. If you need to copyright in then caption, then just type in (C) and it auto-converts into the copyright symbol as shown below.
Pro-tip: Decide where to host the image in your post first, and then caption it :-)
Gallery of Images
What if you want to add a set of photos without overdoing it for your article? Use the ‘Gallery’ feature to add up to 9 photos. Here’s how.
Result is shown below. The gallery feature is very nascent.
You can only add a single caption, and the images added cannot be altered, you can only delete the images and re-add them back, if not ordered correctly.
You can resize the gallery, it is auto-sized based on what you upload.
You cannot add watermarks to videos so add the copyright text in the caption text.
Smart cropping doesn’t work as well, and you cannot fix the image after it has been cropped.
Bottomline?
The watermark and resizing features are pretty handy. The image gallery is a bear but works if you need to compress space or tell a continued story.
Did you find this helpful? If so, would you please take a moment to leave a comment?
p.s. As of October 2024, you can now ‘Edit an Image’ inline with fun features like adding of custom stickers such as your logo. Upload an image, and then use the same ellipsis (…) menu to access ‘Edit image’ option. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the tips! I was googling around to see if there was a way to post multiple pictures in substack :)
This is so useful. Thank you. :-)
